How to Felt a Shed Roof in Bristol: A Step-by-Step Guide

As a homeowner in Bristol, maintaining your shed's roof is essential to ensure it remains secure and watertight. Felting a shed roof is a relatively straightforward DIY project that can be completed with the right materials and tools. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of felting a shed roof in Bristol.

Materials Needed:

  • High-quality shed roofing felt (available in various types, including bitumen and EPDM)
  • Shed roofing underlay (optional)
  • Roofing nails
  • Felt adhesive (if using a bitumen-based felt)
  • Fascia boards (if replacing old ones)
  • Shed roofing boards (if replacing old ones)

Step 1: Prepare the Roof

Before starting the felting process, ensure the shed roof is clear of debris, old felt, and any other obstructions. Remove any old felt, nails, and fascia boards, taking care not to damage the underlying shed roofing boards.

Step 2: Inspect and Repair the Roofing Boards

Inspect the shed roofing boards for any damage or rot. If damaged, replace them with new boards to ensure a secure base for the felt. Use roofing nails to secure the new boards in place.

Step 3: Lay the Underlay (Optional)

If you're using a shed roofing underlay, lay it across the entire roof surface, ensuring it's securely fastened with roofing nails. This underlay provides an extra layer of protection against water ingress.

Step 4: Apply the Felt Adhesive (If Using Bitumen-Based Felt)

If using a bitumen-based felt, apply a layer of felt adhesive to the entire roof surface. This adhesive helps the felt bond to the roof.

Step 5: Lay the Felt

Begin laying the felt at the bottom edge of the roof, working your way up. Ensure the felt is aligned with the fascia boards and securely fastened with roofing nails. Use a chalk line to mark the position of the felt, ensuring it's straight and even.

Step 6: Overlap the Felt

Overlap each row of felt by approximately 150mm, ensuring a watertight seal. Use roofing nails to secure the felt in place.
